Nea Kameni volcano and caldera boat excursions, Santorini

Volcano and caldera

Volcano, Hot Springs and Thirassia

Volcano, hot springs and quieter Thirassia — the extended caldera boat day.

Duration: 6 HoursPace: ModerateBest for: Passengers who want the volcano experience plus a caldera island visit without also booking a separate village tour

The longer caldera boat itinerary adds Thirassia — a quieter caldera-rim island — to the standard volcano and hot-springs loop. Expect boat boarding, volcanic paths and optional swimming.

Nea Kameni's crater walk remains the geological centrepiece, with exposed paths and caldera views.

Hot springs time is typically optional for swimmers; sulphur-warm water and boat access define the stop.

Thirassia offers a slower-paced island contrast before the return to your confirmed port meeting point.

Getting there from the cruise port

Santorini cruise ships typically anchor in the caldera rather than berth alongside a town pier. Most passengers reach shore by tender — commonly to the Old Port (Skala) beneath Fira, though some operators and larger ship deployments use Athinios commercial port with coach transfers to designated meeting points instead. Arrangements vary by ship and tour, so confirm your exact pickup and drop-off from your booking confirmation before sailing day, not from a generic port map. From the Old Port, the cable car to cliff-top Fira is the usual option, but on multi-ship days the queue can consume a meaningful slice of a short call. A steep walking path of roughly 600 steps also links the port to Fira; it is exposed, often hot in summer, and not suitable for all passengers. Donkeys have a long history on this route but are not a recommended modern choice given welfare concerns, crowding and better alternatives — treat them as historic context only. Excursions may meet at the Old Port, Athinios, Fira or other confirmed points depending on the product. Plan every day backwards from your ship's stated all-aboard time, not its published departure, and build in tender and transfer buffer on busy days.

Tips for cruise passengers

  • This is a full half-to-three-quarter day on the water — less room for a separate Oia tour
  • Sturdy shoes for the volcano; swim gear if you want the hot springs
  • Tender to Old Port before boat departure — build buffer on busy mornings

Typically not included

  • Food and beverage
  • Swimwear and towel
  • Extended village touring on Thirassia unless listed
