Volcano and Hot Springs
Boat to the caldera volcano and sulphur hot springs — geology you cannot replicate on a bus tour.
A caldera boat excursion to Nea Kameni volcano with a hot-springs stop — the island's defining geological experience. Involves boat boarding, uneven volcanic paths on the crater island and optional swimming at the springs.
Boats typically depart from the Old Port area; tender logistics from your ship to the port must be factored into your morning.
The volcano walk crosses rough, exposed volcanic terrain — moderate grading reflects heat, uneven footing and the climb on Nea Kameni.
Hot springs stops often involve swimming optional in sulphur-warm water; bring swimwear and a towel if you plan to enter the water.

Getting there from the cruise port
Santorini cruise ships typically anchor in the caldera rather than berth alongside a town pier. Most passengers reach shore by tender — commonly to the Old Port (Skala) beneath Fira, though some operators and larger ship deployments use Athinios commercial port with coach transfers to designated meeting points instead. Arrangements vary by ship and tour, so confirm your exact pickup and drop-off from your booking confirmation before sailing day, not from a generic port map. From the Old Port, the cable car to cliff-top Fira is the usual option, but on multi-ship days the queue can consume a meaningful slice of a short call. A steep walking path of roughly 600 steps also links the port to Fira; it is exposed, often hot in summer, and not suitable for all passengers. Donkeys have a long history on this route but are not a recommended modern choice given welfare concerns, crowding and better alternatives — treat them as historic context only. Excursions may meet at the Old Port, Athinios, Fira or other confirmed points depending on the product. Plan every day backwards from your ship's stated all-aboard time, not its published departure, and build in tender and transfer buffer on busy days.
Tips for cruise passengers
- Wear sturdy shoes for volcanic paths — not flip-flops
- Bring sun protection; the crater island has no shade
- Confirm departure pier on your confirmation — usually Old Port, after your ship's tender
Typically not included
- Food and beverage
- Swimwear and towel
- Port or cable car fees to reach departure point

Do I have to swim at the hot springs?▼
Swimming is typically optional. Many passengers view from the boat or enter briefly — confirm the exact format on your booking.
Is this suitable with mobility limitations?▼
Boat boarding and the volcano path involve steps and uneven rock. This is not an Easy-grade village tour — confirm requirements with the operator.
How does timing work with my ship?▼
You must tender to shore before the boat departure. Plan from all-aboard, not published departure. Confirm cancellation, refund and return-to-ship terms on the partner booking page before you pay. Shore Excursions Group typically markets return-to-ship protections on eligible tours, but wording and eligibility vary by product — treat any guarantee as per partner terms, not as a promise from this site.
